Official Text

That the Somerville Code of Ordinances be amended by adding the words "gender identity and expression" to Part II, Chapter 2, Article V, Division 6, Sec. 2-237, as follows:

 

No person in our city shall be unlawfully discriminated against in matters of housing, employment, education, contracts, purchasing or public accommodations, on the basis of: age, ancestry, citizenship, color, disability, economic status, ethnicity, family/marital status, gender, military status, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or source of income.

Alderman Gewirtz publicly recognized Carl Sciortino for the bill that was passed and requested that the current Human Rights Policy be expanded to include gender, identity and expression. Alderman Sullivan requested to sign on to the ordinance and discussed discrimination against transgender individuals.

Ms. Wheeler, Ms. Field and Ms. Darai spoke about some of the issues facing transgender individuals as well as difficulties faced by businesses when checking ID's. Similar protections are in place in Cambridge, Amherst, Boston, Northampton and Salem. City Solicitor Wright recommended language for the amendment.
